The MTG (Meteosat Third Generation) mission capitalises on the continuation and enhancement of the Meteosat Second Generation (MSG) capabilities with respect to nowcasting, global and regional numerical weather prediction, climate and atmospheric chemistry monitoring.

The MTG system will provide Europe’s National Meteorological Services, and by extension international users and science community, with an advanced operational satellite system, providing improved imaging and new infrared-sounding capabilities for both meteorological and climate applications.

Embedded electronics for heliosyncrhonous orbit satellite

The ICE (Interferometer Control Electronic) is mounted on the Infrared Sounder (IRS) instrument and is part of the Interferometer Subsystem. The ICE drives the interferometer mechanisms to create and accurately control the Optical Path Difference. It interfaces with instrument control unit via MIL-STD-1553 B Bus.

The ICE includes the following functions:

  • Controlling the CCFD Motor Position according to a planned trajectory
  • Providing the secondary power and control lines for the RAU Unit and the LASER Unit
  • Acquisition of the telemetries from the external units (CCFD, LASER and RAU)
  • Relaying analogue meteorology signals from RAU to the Video Chain Unit (VCU)
  • Delivering the CCM_IN_RANGE synchronisation signal to the VCU

The main critical functions are:

  • High Accuracy Floating Point Core FPGA based
  • Quick and Accurate change of control features (even in operation)
  • Position control done without absolute sensor (in the nm range)
